Goal

I am the Agriscience teacher for Everglades City School. I repaired the existing Aquaculture system which was abandoned for several years, over a decade, I was told. I am writing this grant because we need more equipment for maintenance and operation of our current system. We also need to buy food for our fish and containers to store that food. Our goal is to raise Tilapia and have a Fish Fry near the end of the year. We want the Aquaculture program to be a teaching tool for other classes as well. We would like to participate in Aquaculture Career development events as well using the knowledge gained by our program.

What will be done with my students

Students will work the teacher to cut and build a table for Fish tanks. The students will learn how to test test water and keep a record of water parameters, maintain the system, Learn about the lifecycle of the fish, the biology of the fish, The nutrient cycles taking place in an aquatic system, the components of the aquaculture system, how fish feed is converted to fish growth, how to optimize that conversion rate. The operation and maintenance of a commercial Aquaculture system from raising fry to harvesting adult fish. Students will process the fish for a fish fry and serve their product to their parents and other community members at a special community event.

Aquaculture Certification opportunities. The Opportunity for students to explore a career in Agriculture specifically Aquaculture. An understanding of how food is grown and where food comes from. A respect for the process and the hard work that goes behind growing your own food. Students will be proud of what they grow. Fresh and nutrient rich food for their community. 

 

Budget Narrative

We need a table saw to cut wood to build a table for our glass fish tanks which were donated by members of the community. These tanks will house our baby Fish. We already have a filter system for these tanks. we need to buy fish feed and feed containers for all stages of development. We will be growing Tilapia which will be provided to us for free by the University of Florida's Aquaculture extension program located in Ruskin, FL. We are currently running 4 tanks. 2 juvenile tanks and 2 adult tanks as seen in the picture. The community and the school has already paid for the blower and several parts that were needed to get the system up and running. we plan to get the fish soon, but we need a few more supplies to get started and fix a few more small leaks. we need a couple nets and cleaning equipment for the tanks. Equipment such as a Scraper, skimmer, hard brushes with extension poles, broom/dustpan, and cleaning chemicals. We also need about 2 water proof extension cords with covers for the fry tanks (baby fish) and 4 large commercial air stone diffusers which will replace the old broken air stone diffusers which no longer work.
