Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

The goal of this project is to enhance 7th-grade students' civic education and introduce entrepreneurship concepts by integrating the Nisei soldiers' legacy into the curriculum. By aligning with Florida's civics standards, the project aims to deepen students' understanding of government foundations, citizenship responsibilities, and historical impact while fostering historical empathy and civic engagement. Using Stacey Hayashi's manga and supplementary resources, students will explore the experiences and contributions of the Nisei soldiers, who overcame significant prejudice and poverty to become the most decorated unit in U.S. military history. This engagement will help students draw parallels between their own lives and the stories of these historical figures.

In addition, the project aims to introduce entrepreneurship principles by examining how Nisei soldiers utilized the GI Bill to become influential figures in their communities. This aspect of the curriculum will align with standards related to the role of citizens and the impact of individual contributions. By integrating these elements, the project seeks to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of civic responsibilities and entrepreneurial opportunities, preparing them to overcome their own challenges and make a positive impact in their communities.

What will be done with my students

The project will use Stacey Hayashi's manga about the Nisei soldiers to make history and civic education more accessible and engaging for 7th graders. Through structured reading sessions, discussions, and reflective assignments, students will explore the profound historical context and contributions of the Nisei soldiers, enhancing their understanding of civic responsibilities and the significance of civil rights. This approach will help students reflect on what it means to be an American, emphasizing the importance of respecting civil rights consistently, rather than just when politically convenient.

Additionally, the project will incorporate a special opportunity for students to engage directly with the creators of the manga and the movie, "Go for Broke! An Origin Story." This experience will be included as part of the Career & Technical Education (CTE) curriculum, offering students a unique perspective on the intersection of history, storytelling, and professional careers. By interacting with these figures, students will gain insights into how historical narratives are crafted and how they can pursue careers in fields related to history, media, and civic engagement. This interactive component will further enrich their learning experience and inspire them to see the relevance of history and civic education in their own lives and future careers.

Benefits to my students

This project will provide students with a deeper understanding of civic responsibilities and historical empathy through the engaging medium of manga. By studying the Nisei soldiers' legacy, students will gain insights into the challenges and contributions of Japanese Americans during WWII, fostering a greater appreciation for civil rights and the role of citizenship. This immersive approach will help students connect historical events to their own lives, encouraging them to reflect on their roles as active and responsible citizens.

Additionally, the opportunity to interact with the manga’s creator and the film producer will offer students a tangible connection to their studies, bridging the gap between historical content and real-world careers. This experience will not only enhance their learning but also inspire them to explore careers related to history, media, and civic engagement. By combining historical education with professional insights, the project aims to motivate students to see the relevance of civic responsibility and to envision themselves as contributors to society.

Budget Narrative

Each expense directly supports the project's goals by enhancing the educational experience and ensuring that all students can fully engage with the curriculum. The cost of materials ensures that every student has access to the manga and film, crucial for deepening their understanding of the historical content. The budget for guest speakers provides valuable real-world connections, enriching students' learning with professional insights. The allocation for support services addresses the diverse needs of our student population, ensuring that language barriers and socio-emotional challenges are met effectively. Finally, supplies for projects and activities will facilitate hands-on learning and creativity, reinforcing the project's educational objectives.
