The program will improve student engagement while rewarding positive behavior that decreases negative or disruptive undesired behavior. The result will create a better educational learning environment that will be carried throughout their academic career.

Goal

What will be done with my students

Every day, the students will be encouraged to come to class on time, follow the classroom routines and expectations and take on leadership roles. Within the first 5 minutes of class, the teacher will choose 2-3 Class Leaders. The class leaders' responsibilities are similar to a teachers role. They will assist their peers in an academic capacity, as well as assist in redirecting the peers in their group when they get off track or are veering off from the classroom expectations. They will demonstrate the high standard of leadership and character for the class period. If the class leader is failing to meet the expectations they are informed they will be switched out with another classmate for that period. They will have the opportunity to get back on track to be chosen again later in the week or following week. At the end of the period, the class leaders will each receive a reward (special pencil, snack or item) prior to leaving. New class leaders will be chosen daily.  

 

Benefits to my students

I tried this program last year with my students and it resulted in exceeding my expectations. In an effort to motivate the students to put forth their best effort and assist with the classroom environment and managing student behaviors the class leadership program improved FAST scores for gen-ed and ESE students. The students that had struggled with arriving to class on time, disruption, completing class assignments and putting forth effort have improved on all areas, thus in return, creating an environment that produces exceptional learning and engagement. The students learned how to be leaders and engage with others in a respectful and helpful manner. Referrals decreased significantly, and the students who are often left out of reward programs due to behavior, grades etc. felt not only more confident but invested in their academics and provided quality work. 

 

Budget Narrative

Last year I spent my own money to fund the program as I was not sure how effective it would be. It proved to be very successful and also very costly. The 300$ classroom allowance I receive yearly is used for school supplies not leaving any money for classroom learning environment/academic & behavioral rewards. The funds will help support this effective program without adding a financial burden on myself. The program will ultimately have a positive impact for the whole school and student body.
