What will be done with my students

Students will participate in a variety of high leverage and research based practices incorporating instructional strategies, using Graphic novels to improve comprehension skills by providing visual cues that aid in comprehension using images to infer meaning and make connections between text and visuals. The integration of images will help our student readers make inferences, draw conclusions, and understand the relationships between words and pictures.s will use reading activities and strategies such as:
-Pre-Reading Activities:
-Previewing: Have students preview the graphic novel by examining the cover, illustrations, and chapter titles to make predictions about the content.

-Sequencing Activities: Students identify and discuss the sequencing of events in the graphic novel, emphasizing how visuals contribute to the narrative structure.
-Guided Discussions: Engage students in discussions about the text, asking questions that promote critical thinking and comprehension.
-Prompt for Evidence: Encourage students to provide evidence from the text to support their responses and interpretations.
-Vocabulary Development:
Teach Key Vocabulary: Introduce and discuss key vocabulary words before reading to enhance comprehension.

Post-Reading Activities:
Summarization: Students summarize the main ideas of the text, emphasizing key details.
Reflective Discussions: Facilitate discussions that encourage students to reflect on the text, share their opinions, and make connections to their own lives.

Benefits to my students

The use of visuals and text in graphic novels provides middle school students with visually appealing, captivating, high interest opportunities to promote literacy, mirroring content standards from rigorous text to lexile levels of students. Using graphic novels provides reluctant readers, visual elements making the reading experience more enjoyable and engaging. Employing graphic novels alongside targeted reading strategies has the potential to elevate students' reading skills, comprehension, and overall literacy development. Graphic novels empower students to apply critical thinking skills and engage with text through visual imagery. They serve as a valuable tool for increasing student engagement and motivation by leveraging the power of visual storytelling. The incorporation of graphic novels into our curriculum will promote literacy skills among reluctant readers and English Language Learners (ELL) as they navigate both textual and visual elements, thereby enhancing their overall reading comprehension.
