Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

To purchase High-Definition Digital Display Microscopes for examining trace evidence and fingerprint comparison. These Digital Display Microscopes will provide the students with the ability to view small trace evidence such as hairs, fibers, tool marks, ballistic impressions and make fingerprint comparisons from fingerprint lifts found on a crime scene.
These Digital Display Microscopes are real-world crime scene tools used in the industry to view trace evidence and make fingerprint comparisons.
By the nature of these Digital Display Microscopes, they can be used by more than just 1 student at a time and will be used as a class set. The purchase and use of these Digital Display Microscopes are in alignment with the State of Florida Department of Education standards and benchmarks for Criminal Justice Operations 3, these kits enable students to:
Process a mock crime scene (Standard 22.15)
Identify focal points of fingerprints (Standard 23.02)

What will be done with my students

Per the State of Florida Department of Education standards and Benchmarks for Criminal Justice Operations 3 22.15 students are required to process a mock crime scene, including the location and identification of trace evidence such as shell casing, glass and hair samples left and recovered from crime scenes. These microscopes will assist the student in making the identification of this trace evidence. In Standard 23.02 the Identify focal points of fingerprints, these digital microscopes will be used to view the minutia of a fingerprint in great detail to identify the matching patterns between the known prints of a suspect and the fingerprint lift collected at the scene. These kits will greatly assist in the facilitation of these standards and benchmarks.

In real-world Crime Labs, certified fingerprint examiners and trace evidence technicians use these types of digital microscopes to match evidence to suspect of many different types of crimes.

The Atlantic HS Academy of Law and Government as required is a member of a CTSO (Career and Technical Student Organizations) namely the Florida Public Service Association. Two times a year the FPSA has conferences and competitions and some of these competitions are for Fingerprint comparison and Crime Scene Investigations. Students are required to bring their own materials and tools for these events, and these Digital Microscopes will assist the students during these competitions.

Benefits to my students

These Digital Display microscopes will assist the students by providing them an opportunity to observe and view trace evidence in a group setting, they can be shared by 2-3 students and will promote teamwork on crime scene and crime lab projects. These Digital Display microscopes are high quality and will provide the students the ability to see microscopic evidence and complete fingerprint comparisons in a real-world application.
Also as mentioned above, The Atlantic HS Academy of Law and Government as required is a member of the Florida Public Service Association. Two times a year the FPSA has conferences and competitions and some of these competitions are for Fingerprint comparison and Crime Scene Investigations. These kits will assist the students during these competitions.
Lastly, these Digital Display Microscopes will further provide our students with advanced knowledge in Crime Scene Investigation and the comparison of Fingerprints, thus giving our students a leg up in the industry they may chose as a career.
