Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

Increasing engagement in our struggling readers is an on-going problem. Middle school students who are reading below grade-level don't naturally gravitate towards books when they are looking for something fun to do Part of this could be because they don't come from print-rich homes with a variety of options for them to choose from. Another reason could be they are hesitant to select an independent book that their peers may see as "babyish," thus embarrassing them. I would like to provide a lending library to each of our three intensive classrooms that contain high-interest books that have lower lexiles, making them easier for struggling readers to read independently. The books will appear to be middle-school level, so students won't be embarrassed. However, they will be within the 3 - 5th grade lexile band making them appropriate for independent reading

What will be done with my students

Intensive classrooms will be provided with a small lending library of books. These are books that are known to be high-interest, yet they have a low enough lexile to allow students to read them independently. To encourage students, teacher will do a "First Chapter Friday," each week until the first chapter of each of the 20 books have been featured. Students will be recognized with a certificate being hung in the classroom each time they complete a novel.

Benefits to my students

Reading, much like a sport, improves with consistent practice. By providing our middle-school students with books they can be successful with, they will be encouraged to read more frequently. As their skill set improves, they will be able to select books that are increasingly more difficult. The ultimate goal is that they can eventually select on grade-level books from our school media-center.

Budget Narrative

Three of each of the novel titles listed above will be purchased. Each of our three intensive teachers will receive a complete set of 20 novels, along with 200 certificates. The total price is inclusive of tax.
