Goal

My goal for this sensory integration grant is to help my students develop cognitive skills, enhance motor skills, encourage social interaction, manage emotions, stimulate language development, and foster imagination and creativity.
Intensive Behavior Intervention is a self-contained classroom, where overstimulation can happen quickly. Each student processes overstimulation in a different way. Having the items to incorporate a calm/relaxing environment will help regulate emotions and create a better classroom environment.

What will be done with my students

My students will use these sensory items on a daily basis and provide comfort when needed. It will engage multiple senses and fulfill their emotional and physical needs. My students will become more mindful, and be able to focus on something outside of themselves. It is known that sensory stimuli can strengthen neural pathways in the brain and improve how they process sensory information.  

 

Benefits to my students

Sensory play in special needs classrooms is significant due to its potential to enhance the effectiveness of interventions and support the overall development of children with autism and intellectual disabilities. Sensory therapy is a structured approach that focuses on teaching and reinforcing desired behaviors while reducing challenging ones. Integrating sensory play into special needs classrooms can offer many key benefits-
Development of sensory integration skills – Sensory play exposes my students to various textures, sounds, and sensations, helping them learn how to process and integrate sensory information more effectively.
Language and communication development– Sensory play can encourage verbal and nonverbal communication. It allows my students to express their preferences, likes, and dislikes.
Emotional regulation – Sensory play allows my students to self-regulate their emotions and manage stress. It can have a calming effect and help reduce anxiety.
Motor skills development – Playing with sand, finger painting, or manipulating objects can enhance fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
Social interaction – Group sensory play sessions can foster social interactions, turn-taking, and cooperation among children, promoting positive peer relationships.
Cognitive growth – Exploring sensory experiences stimulates cognitive development by encouraging exploration, problem-solving, and creativity. 

 

Budget Narrative

The budget for this grant will allow me to fill my classroom with essential sensory items and flexible seating to promote a calming, effective learning environment. These items will help my students in various ways: Sensory items can help students relax and calm down, which can help them focus and respond to stimuli in more positive ways.
They can help students develop social skills like sharing, planning, and negotiating.
This can help them process and respond to sensory information, which can improve their overall development.
Sensory items and flexible seating can help my students self-regulate by providing feedback to their sensory systems.
Sensory items in this budget can help students develop language and communication skills and help students improve their coordination, including hand-eye coordination.
