Mirrors, Windows, and Sliding Glass Doors: A Collection of Prosocial Picture Books for PreK through 12th Grade Character Education

Books are sometimes windows, offering views of worlds that may be read or imagined, familiar or strange. These windows are also sliding glass doors, and readers have only to walk through in imagination to become part of whatever world has been created or recreated by the author. When lighting conditions are just right, however, a window can also be a mirror…and readers often seek their mirrors in books.

Seacrest Country Day School (SCDS) is committed to whole-child education for all students from Prekindergarten through 12th Grade. Because Seacrest educators know that academic learning is contingent on social and emotional well-being, they are intent on integrating supportive interventions that promote the prosocial behavior of all students. The 2024-25 goal for SCDS is to ensure that the entire community from Prekindergarten through 12th Grade becomes well-versed in the intellectual understanding and practical application of the SCDS Core Values of kindness, respect, gratitude, empathy, perseverance, integrity, responsibility, cooperation, curiosity, and creativity. A character trait has been assigned to each month with age-appropriate discussions and learning activities presented at each grade level.

One essential learning activity is the exploration of children’s literature picture books. Although picture books are generally used with very young children, these books are often written with rich, sophisticated language on a myriad of relatable themes that can incite important shared inquiry discussions for students of all ages. Picture books with prosocial themes can serve as “mirrors, windows, and sliding glass doors” for students to view themselves as contributing members of a shared community. This grant request is for a collection of picture books that support the SCDS Core Values Education for students Prekindergarten through 12th Grade.

What will be done with my students

The picture book collection contains five (5) books for each of SCDS's Core Values. The books will be shared across each school division and read aloud to generate shared inquiry discussions. The read-aloud and shared inquiry discussions are purposed to allow students to think deeply about how they can develop and demonstrate the SCDS Core Values. Additionally, the books can be used to create collaborative learning projects across the disciplines at each teacher's discretion. 

 

Benefits to my students

Prekindergarten through 12th Grade students will engage in read-aloud stories and shared inquiry discussions to support the SCDS Core Values to incite self-reflection and promote prosocial behavior as a valued life-long practice. 

 

Budget Narrative

The collection of hardcover picture books will be purchased via Amazon using the school's account. The purchases will be tax-exempt and shipping fees waived.
