Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

Students at Educational Pathways Academy are working hard to overcome challenges related to language-based learning disabilities, primarily dyslexia. In addition to learning disabilities, many of our students are also dealing with social emotional challenges, frustration, and ADHD. It is my goal as a teacher to incorporate social emotional learning into my classroom time so that students can make gains in their social emotional skills while simultaneously building their abilities in literacy.

What will be done with my students

I am requesting funding for a suite of tools that can be used to introduce and talk about feelings and emotions. Working with the Social Emotional Learners Educator's Starter Kit, I will facilitate lessons, discussions, and activities for students in my class. Together, we will identify emotions and feelings, and work towards developing tools for managing overwhelming situations, building a positive self-image, and identifying ways to show empathy, compassion, and kindness.

My class will work with the materials in the toolkit along with utilizing a Re Write Max Kids Writing Tablet, which is a reusable and lightweight writing tool. The Re Write Tablet allows students to write a response or draw a picture to share with me or their classmates, then instantly erase and reuse.

Benefits to my students

Students will learn to identify and understand their feelings and emotions, which is helpful in the classroom, on the playground, and in their life outside of school. They will learn how to respond and interact with others to help resolve conflicts that may arise when interacting with others. They will improve their social skills develop a set of tools they can use with working through a disagreement or a situation that is frustrating. When students with language based learning disabilities have a better understanding of their emotions, we see a direct impact on improvement in their academics. When students have the tools to work through situations, they can navigate interactions and not let their emotions get in the way of their learning.

Budget Narrative

This request provides all the supplies I will need to implement a high quality social emotional learning component into my curriculum. I will utilize these tools for all students enrolled in my language arts classes.
