Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

My goal as a PE teacher is to provide my students with physical activities that support each student's growth and encourages building a positive school community through play. At Educational Pathways Academy, our students are working hard to make academic gains and overcome challenges associated with language based learning disabilities such a dyslexia. Many of our students are also have social emotional challenges and ADHD. Their time in PE class is an important outlet and stress reliever - it is also an opportunity to use precious time during the school day to build their social emotional skills and help them learn to problem solve.

What will be done with my students

During PE Class on Monday-Friday and during field day games, we will set up 9 Square in the Air. This interactive game is a combination of volleyball and traditional 9 Square. This new game will be introduced to students during the Cooperative Games Unit when we focus on ball control.

Grades 1-3 will begin with catch-and-release in pairs, and work towards playing 4 Square. They will culminate with 9 Square.

Grades 4 -5 will begin with 4 square work into 9 Square with a focus on cooperative game play.

6-8 will begin with 9 square with a focus on aim, accuracy, and cooperative game play.

We will begin by introducing the game to students during our cooperative games unit when we focus on ball control.

Grades 1-3 will begin with catch and release in pairs, moving to 4 Square and then work up to 9 Square.
Grades 4-5 will begin with 4 Square and work into 9 Square with a focus on cooperative game play.
Grades 6-8 will open with 9 Square with a focus on aim, accuracy, and cooperative game play.

Our school does not currently have a gym or a fully developed playground. This grant would support a much-needed aspect of our Physical Education Curriculum. With a small student population, all of whom have learning difficulties, traditional sports can be challenging. 9 Square in the Air is easily adaptable to our students and application can be differentiated based on age group.

Benefits to my students

In addition to the physical and mental benefits that students will gain from this interactive and fun game, they will have a safe play option when our field is flooded during August-October. Providing a non-traditional PE/Recess option will allow students to obtain gross and fine motor skills as well as social emotional skills. Students will have a safe blacktop game option when our small field is flooded during Aug-Oct months. Students will have a non traditional PE/Recess game option to obtain gross and fine motor skills as well as social emotional skills. Because this game is easily adaptable to skill level and number of players, this gives an opportunity for small groups of students to have an option to pick up and play a game without having to recruit a large team of players.
