What will be done with my students

At Lopez Exceptional Center our mission and vision are to prepare students for life. A permanent hydroponic garden will significantly enhance learning through experiential education. It will foster a sense of community in our school, and it will also improve student engagement and their academic performance by making them participate in their own project from the planting of the plants, the assembly of the equipment, irrigation, monitoring of growth of the product, collection of the product and taking inventory. All these skills are fully aligned with the special curriculum designed by our Hillsborough County Public Schools District.

Benefits to my students

Our neurodivergent students with multiple cognitive, behavior, and communication disabilities will benefit from this project by learning to work one on one with each other, work in small groups as well as learning to take directions from adults in charge. The project will lead them to raise awareness about the importance of having a healthy school environment. It will also promote healthy eating habits in them, such as increased fruit and vegetable consumption, by providing high quality, nutritious food options and hands-on classroom activities around agriculture and nutrition, and the development of innovative projects for planting, resource conservation and self-sustainability.
All students -(100%) will take a pre and posttest about the concept studied.
By the end of May 2025, all students will take a post standard test about the concept and at least 70% of them will pass it with at least a C grade or a 70% grade. We also believe that this project will also reduce our behavioral calls by 25%-or at least 15 of the students with the most behaviors over 60 in the first year by keeping our special education students engaged and keeping them stimulated in this process. We also believe that this life skill project will prepare them for a possible job after graduating.
