Goal
I would like to fund an after school Robotics Club at Beachside Elementary School. I am asking for a grant to cover the cost of our teams registration and the 2024-2025 FIRST® LEGO® League Challenge Set.
Category
Learning Aids - Sunshine state book sets, robotics kits, puzzle boards, science models, engineering supplies, etc.
What will be done with my students
FIRST LEGO League gives elementary students the opportunity to work and create together to solve a common problem. The really cool thing about FIRST LEGO League is...all skill levels are welcomed and needed, technical or non-technical. I will guide students as they gain skills and confidence in a supportive, inclusive environment. My team will explore real-world scientific challenges and introduce coding and robot building principles using LEGO® educational materials. The friendly competitions are at the heart of Challenge, as my team engages in research, problem-solving, coding, and engineering - building and programming a LEGO® Education SPIKE™ Prime robot that navigates the missions of a robot game. They will also participate in a research project to identify and solve a relevant real-world problem. The 2024-2025 ocean-themed SUBMERGEDSM materials will help students use creative thinking and LEGO® technology to explore the layers of the ocean and bring learnings and ideas to the surface in a new challenge.
There many FL Benchmark standards across STEM that a Robotics Club integrates. As the roles of science, mathematics, and technology grow in our society, we must prepare students to thrive in a highly complex world. STEM-based education in Robotics teaches children more than science and mathematics concepts. It focuses on hands-on learning with real-world application along with logical thought processes and problem-solving. This allows students to develop skills that will help them be successful. Robotics will challenge students to think critically and come up with their own solutions to problems. It will help students develop a variety of skill sets, including problem solving and 21st-century skills; it fosters ingenuity and creativity, builds resilience and encourages experimentation, teamwork, and knowledge application.
Benefits to my students
The club will immerse approximately 12-24 fourth and fifth grade students in research, problem-solving, coding, and an engineering curriculum that will engage them in a range of rigorous and relevant learning experiences.
These are just some of the 5th grade Florida Science Standards that are addressed in this years FIRST® LEGO® League Challenge SUBMERGED SM season, a part of the FIRST® DIVE SM season themes:
SC.5.N.1.1: Define a problem, use appropriate reference materials to support scientific understanding, plan and carry out scientific investigations of various types such as: systematic observations, experiments requiring the identifications of variables, collecting and organizing data, interpreting data in charts, tables, and graphics, analyze information, make predictions, and defend conclusions.
SC.5.E.7.1: Create a model to explain the parts of the water cycle. Water can be a gas, a liquid, or a solid and can go back and forth from one state to another.
SC.5.E.7.2: Recognize that the ocean is an integral part of the water cycle and is connected to all of Earth’s water reservoirs via evaporation and precipitation processes.
SC.5.E.7.3: Recognize how air temperature, barometric pressure, humidity, wind speed and direction, and precipitation determine the weather in a particular place and time.
SC.5.E.7.4: Distinguish among the various forms of precipitation (rain, snow, sleet, and hail), making connections to the weather in a particular place and time.
SC.5.E.7.5: Recognize that some of the weather-related differences, such as temperature and humidity, are found among different environments, such as swamps, deserts, and mountains.
SC.5.E.7.6: Describe characteristics (temperature and precipitation) of different climate zones as they relate to latitude, elevation, and proximity to bodies of water.
SC.5.L.15.1: Describe how, when the environment changes, differences between individuals allow some plants and animals to survive and reproduce while others die or move to new locations.
SC.5.P.10.2: Investigate and explain that energy has the ability to cause motion or create change.
SC.5.P.10.4: Investigate and explain that electrical energy can be transformed into heat, light, and sound energy, as well as the energy of motion.
SC.5.P.13.1: Identify familiar forces that cause objects to move, such as pushes or pulls, including gravity acting on falling objects.
SC.5.P.13.2: Investigate and describe that the greater the force applied to it, the greater the change in motion of a given object.
SC.5.P.13.3: Investigate and describe that the more mass an object has, the less effect a given force will have on the object’s motion.
SC.5.P.13.4: Investigate and explain that when a force is applied to an object, but it does not move, it is because another opposing force is being applied by something in the environment so that the forces are balanced.
