What will be done with my students

Native American history is American history but as an educator I don't feel that they are adequately represented in the curriculum. With this opportunity I can go to Pine Ridge in South Dakota and not only set an example of good citizenship for my students by volunteering but document (through photography and video) the reservation, culturally significant landmarks, and the Oglala Sioux people for my students. This experience and the insight I gain can be utilized year after year by students in 6th through 8th grades. Furthermore, the contacts I plan to make can serve as resources for students in the form of Skype/Zoom sessions to further educate students about Native American culture.

Benefits to my students

1) Represent Hillsborough County Schools, Ben Hill Middle School and, most importantly, my students, as a volunteer in service of those in need.
2) Use the cultural immersion components of the service to gain firsthand knowledge of the Oglala Sioux, their land and history which I can share with students.
3) Document the experience to give students a new understanding of life on the reservation as well as culture and history by utilizing multimedia.
4) Develop professional contacts who can participate in future lessons for my students via Skype and Zoom.
