Goal

To grow tomato seeds with my students that have come from the International Space Station.

Category

Learning Aids - Sunshine state book sets, robotics kits, puzzle boards, science models, engineering supplies, etc.

What will be done with my students

I have ordered tomato seeds from the organization First the Seed. They send you two sets of tomato seeds. One set has spent 6 weeks aboard the International Space Station. The other set has not. The seeds are not labeled so we don't know which is which. Students grow both sets of tomato seeds and collect data on their germination. We then submit the data on their website and they tell us which seeds were the space seeds. After they have grown for a few weeks, students will each be able to take home a tomato plant to continue growing at their house. We will be doing this project with our 2nd grade buddy class. We will plant the seeds together. The second graders do most of the watering and observing. The 4th graders will collect the germination data.

Benefits to my students

There are many benefits for my students. We have 3 different science learning goals having to do with plants. This is a hands-on experience where they are seeing germination and the life cycle of a flowering plant. They are also able to teach our 2nd grade buddies about plants as well. We also have 4 learning goals about the practice of science. Through this experiment, we learn about setting up a blind experiment, taking and recording data, and the importance of citizen science. It is very exciting for them to participate in a real science experiment where the data will be used by NASA scientists to learn more about growing plants in space.

Budget Narrative

Peet pellets and starter trays for when the seeds are first planted and when we are taking data on their germination. Larger plastic pots and potting soil for when they get large enough to re-plant and take home.
