Goal
I'd like to set up a puzzle station in the media center for students to use on a daily basis during the lunch STEAM program.
Category
Learning Aids - Sunshine state book sets, robotics kits, puzzle boards, science models, engineering supplies, etc.
What will be done with my students
A station will be set up in the media center that will allow students to work on completing jigsaw puzzles.
I plan to have puzzles that range in complexity, with a focus on floor puzzles. Floor puzzles have extra large pieces are are perfect for our littlest Sea Turtles.
Many students enjoy jigsaw puzzles but they don't realize it takes some practice to become successful. Floor puzzles are a great way to build their confidence.
Benefits to my students
Jigsaw puzzles offer several educational benefits for young students, making them a valuable tool for both cognitive development and social learning.
Here are just a few of those benefits:
Problem-Solving Skills: Puzzles require students to think critically and solve problems by figuring out where each piece fits. This enhances their ability to think logically and develop strategies for problem-solving.
Memory Enhancement: Recalling shapes, colors, and patterns to complete the puzzle helps improve memory and attention to detail.
Spatial Awareness: Working on puzzles helps students understand the relationship between the parts and the whole, which is crucial for developing spatial reasoning skills.
Hand-Eye Coordination: Manipulating small puzzle pieces improves fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination as students learn to fit pieces together.
Puzzles also help develop mathematical skills, especially in younger children. Some examples are identifying different shapes and how they fit together and
sorting pieces by color, shape, or edge.
Working on a puzzle together with others also develops social skills like collaboration and perseverance.
Budget Narrative
These puzzles will be stored in the media center and can be used over and over again through the years, benefitting hundreds of students.
