Goal

Telling time on an analog clock can be quite tricky for young students, especially now with the common use of digital clocks. Additionally, academic development Telling Time is a basic math skill that can help students understand more complex concepts like fractions, decimals, and measurements. Elementary students are typically introduced to analog clocks in kindergarten and or first grade, where they learn about the different hands, the numbers on the clock face, and how to read time. Telling time becomes more complex for 2nd and 3rd graders (ages 5-8) as they are introduced to more advanced concepts of time since the base numbering system is 60 instead 10-100. Finally, for the last two years every K-5 team leader asked our Health & Wellness Committee to search for a fun way to help our students learn & better understand the concepts of telling time. To achieve this goal, we are asking you to grant our request to purchase the Math & Movement Clock Hop Floor Mat.

What will be done with my students

First students will be introduced and or reinforced to the concept that “60” is the base numbering system for telling time by looking at the numbers on the large mat 1-60. Secondly, students will be guided to use their observation skills and think about what they see on the color-coded clock mat. Next, the whole class can point to and count the color-coded seconds and or minutes symbols. Now it is game time for the entire group to warm-up their brains & bodies by jumping round the clock to practice the “60” base numbering system to remember “60” seconds equal one minute. Finally, as a cool down activity students will use their words to explain what position of time on the clock mat they happen to be seated in.
Additionally, six different progressive levels of difficulty activity timecards have been prepared to help students:
• tell time to the nearest hour, half hour, 5-minute mark, and minute
• understand elapsed time
• practice skip counting by 5s
• Set the clock hands to then have students write different times on white board in digital format. And or look at a clock with a digital display and draw analog version.
• Have our students use clock hour and minute hands, and or a yardstick and ruler, or their own bodies to create the times that they see on the note card or display by hopping on the mat.
• For example, we might ask students to create the time 2:15 on the mat; students will first stand on the 12- hour hand and hop out the hours first, landing on two.
• The student will then place the hour hand down on the 2 where they’re standing.
• To help students find where the minute hand should go, the student will go back to the top of the mat at the START HERE mark and hop 15 spaces/minutes forward, landing on 15. They will then place the minute hand down on the mat pointing towards their feet.
• After students are confident with telling time, we will also incorporate reading word problems to introduce how to solve elapsed base “60” time challenges by stepping or hopping out the differences.
 

 

Benefits to my students

This interactive analog clock mat for teaching time is an ideal addition to all our Village Oaks Elementary School teacher’s math classes and each will have access to use the Math Clock Hop Mat. The Clock Hop Map allows young students to move around and play while practicing time. Teaching time with this clock manipulative becomes a full body, engaging activity for energetic kids! This colorful clock mat helps teachers and students go beyond the digital clock for teaching time. It is an interactive analog clock activity that brings math to a larger-than-life scale. The Clock Hop Mat has adequate space for several students to interact with the clock face at once – promoting a collaborative learning environment. In addition, students will be able to use the included hands, and yardsticks, or their bodies to identify and create different times on the clock manipulative. Learning clock math concepts becomes easier when the numbers are tangible and engaging! Most young students never like to sit still too long; and in fact, research indicates students learn better while they are moving! Movement activity boosts blood flow and oxygen levels in the brain, resulting in greater learning comprehension and memory retention. Plus, movement-based learning helps young kids with the development of both large and fine motor skills. An additional benefit for our students is that the clock features numbers for the hour, minute, and second hands; Finally, each clock quadrant is color-coded differently to visually assist with understanding “halves” (180 degrees) and “quarters” (90 degrees) which will help enhance upper grade level students to visually and verbally discuss fractions!  

 

Budget Narrative

This durable, soap and water washable interactive analog clock mat for teaching time is the ideal addition to ALL our Village Oaks Elementary School teacher’s math classes as each will have access to use the Math Clock Hop Mat. Additionally, the mat will be used for student achievement celebrations and family events. This item will cost $269.50 with applicable taxes and fees.
