Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

Our goal is to teach students with special needs how to cook and safely store the food so they can become as independent as possible once they graduate from our transition program. We do cooking activities every week, sometimes several a week. We also cook a large Thanksgiving dinner for administration, staff, students, and many district employees. Students also cook for a variety of outings for themselves, and also to supply food to parties that they have. If we have a refrigerator, students can cook for things ahead of time and store it properly or store leftovers they can eat later.

What will be done with my students

We do cooking activities every week, sometimes several times a week with multiple students and classrooms. We also cook a large Thanksgiving dinner for administration, staff, students, and many district employees. Students also cook for a variety of outings for themselves, and also to supply food to parties that they have (holidays, picnics, end of the year parties). In order to be able to make it easier for students to cook and save food without it going to waste we would love to have a refrigerator in our unit. We work with special needs adults that have a variety of disabilities, and it is easier for the students to be able to learn to cook food and store it in a refrigerator for future use.

Benefits to my students

Our students will benefit from a refrigerator because not only will they learn to cook, they will also learn to put leftover food into tupperware that they then can store in the fridge and they will be able eat on the leftovers throughout the week.
