Goal
Increase student’s knowledge of light and electrical energy by engineering circuits that light up. Increase student’s knowledge of the solar system and space exploration through the creation of three-dimensional models of the solar system that actually rotate and revolve. Students will utilize Kiwi Kits to connect Florida State Standards in their STEM projects.
Category
Learning Aids - Sunshine state book sets, robotics kits, puzzle boards, science models, engineering supplies, etc.
What will be done with my students
Students will engineer their own electronic circuits and power up the circuits to power lights. This hands-on STEM project will teach them about the attributes of electrical and light energy. They will also learn about the solar system by building a three-dimensional model of the solar system that actually moves. The solar system kit will also teach students about the energy of motion by having them create orbiter spaceships that require power pumps to launch. Once built, students will be able to bring their model home.
Benefits to my students
Students will investigate characteristics of electrical and light energy such as conductivity and pathways while engineering the electronic circuits that when built, light up (SC.5.P. 10.1, SC.5.P.11.1, and SC.5.P.11.2). They will also observe that energy has the ability to cause motion or create change (SC.5.P.10.2). They will recognize attributes of the Solar System, distinguish between major objects of the Solar System and Earth’s place in it when they build the three-dimensional model of the Solar System that actually rotates (SC.5.E.5.1, SC.5.E.5.2, and SC.5.E.5.3). Students will also learn about familiar forces that cause objects to move such as pushes and pulls while engineering the orbiter and the power pumps that launch it (SC.5.13.1). Outcomes will be measured by successful creation of electrical circuits, proper placement of solar planets on the three-dimensional model, and 75% of the students showing proficiency on standards SC.5.E.5.1, SC.5.E.5.2, SC.5.E.5.3, SC.5.P. 10.1, SC.5.10.2, SC.5.P.11.1, and SC.5.P.11.2 as measured the Science PM 3 assessment.
Budget Narrative
The Kiwi Astronaut Kits will be used for students to learn about objects in the solar system, their placement, and attributes by building a three-dimensional, moving model. The Kiwi Light Up Electronic Kits will teach students about attributes of electrical and light energy, how they travel and how engineers utilize those forms of energy.
