Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

Mountain Math CENTER EDITION flip charts will supplement our core math instruction with a review program that supports long term mastery. Concepts taught spiral throughout the school year.

Review stores information into long-term MASTERY the way a soccer player's abilities are increased not primarily through games (tests) but mainly through practice (review).

Research clearly indicates that review should be systematically planned and incorporated into the instructional program.

What will be done with my students

Students will utilize Mountain Math as a review during their math class and math centers. Teachers will guide the review process. Students will collaborate on the review math tasks. This routine will revisit standards based math concepts through a spiral method utilizing repetition, familiarity, and growing complexity. A Mountain Math Flip Chart will be given to 2 First Grade Math Classes, 2 Second Grade Math Classes and one to each departmentalized grade math class in Grades 3-5. The Math Coordinator's Math Classroom will have a copy of grades 1-5 Flip Charts for enrichment math classes of varying levels.

Two types of lap desks will provide flexible seating in small groups and math centers.

Benefits to my students

Review is valuable because it increases both learning and retention. Some evidence indicates that approximately two-thirds of the concepts "learned" in high school and college courses are forgotten within two years. The problem is especially crucial in mathematics, where skills and concepts are taught that cannot be regained simply by rereading. Review cannot be omitted--it is an important component in mathematics instruction.
