Reviving Reading for Pleasure to Read to Succeed. The goal of this project is to foster independent reading and literacy progress and restore the habit of reading for pleasure through the use of the novels in the classroom on the shelf readily available to the students. Presently I have about 75- 100 novels. I instruct grades 6-8, and our school does not have a library. I want to ensure that the diversity of choice covers all genders and interests, including a few graphic novels.

What will be done with my students

During the first 15 minutes of each ELA class, time has been allocated for silent, independent reading. Students will record how many pages they have read to track their pace. Additionally students will conference with the teacher weekly/biweekly to discuss/clarify aspects of the novel or link with skills taught in class. The teacher, as well as students, will share quick book snapshots to invite others to select this book for their next read. With the teacher, students will develop a goal for reading and build their profile to be revisited every quarter and at the end of the year for reflection. The focus is on the individual student, not a race or competition with others. It’s designed to build intrinsic motivation and stamina in all of our students.

Benefits to my students

Science of Reading confirms the critical importance of independent reading to a child’s literacy. The bottom line is that students must be reading beyond what we present in class to strengthen their literacy skills. The project will benefit students in grades 6-8 at Marco Island Charter Middle School which does not have a library by helping to enhance their reading fluency and comprehension, as well as to foster reading independently. Students will increase an appreciation for literature and place a value on reading in their lives, strengthening their skills and stamina at the same time. Although we will supplement with online access to literature, having a book in your hand increases ownership of the process and balance with the use of technology. We want to build a community of readers and writers, for reading also impacts writing.

Budget Narrative

$500 for new and used books to build our classroom library for diverse readers. Books at a reduced price could increase the number of books I can purchase. The books run from 5.88-15. 65 depending on new or possibly used. I will pursue checking more for used if I receive the grant. I did not list the prices above, for I was not sure they were all populating. I have listed novels and prices below.
