Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

Our goal is the goal of all reading teachers, to help our students fall in love with books! Beyond all the benchmarks and standards, our goal is have our students want to read. We want to create an intrinsically motivated love of literature, not because their teacher told them to read. By providing the students not just the first book in the series, City of Ember, but the entire box set we hope that students will go on to read the other 3 books and keep the set as something they treasure forever!

What will be done with my students

Fifth grade students in Collier County participate in novel studies throughout the year. One of the books they will read this year is City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau. This is a book that follows a post-apocalyptic, dystopian world where everyone lives in single city underground after what is only known to the residents as the "Disaster". Students will be immersed in the exciting story of the two heroes, Lina Mayfleet and Doon Harrow, as they try to save their crumbling city and perhaps even find out what lies outside their beloved home. Students will engage in this novel study and cover some of the important standards and benchmarks for fifth grade. Once the students have completed the novel study, they will be given a set of all of the sequels to take home. Students will be able to continue the journey with Lina and Doon as they enter the world above ground and learn the origins of the City of Ember.

Benefits to my students

This book is a beautiful narrative with deep themes that will engage our students in critical thinking. It is the first example of the dystopian or post-apocalyptic genre that many students will experience. The characters are relatable and exhibit important character traits such as perseverance and ingenuity. Last year, when I (Monica) found out we would be reading this book for the 24/25 year I read it immediately. I could not put it down! I had to read the sequel. Rarely does a young adult book grab me the way this story did. It holds a special place in my heart and I want to share that with my students. Our hope is that the passion we share for this story and a personal set will inspire them to continue their journey with these characters in this vivid world.

Budget Narrative

We are asking for enough box sets to provide all of our fifth grade students with their own to treasure forever. We can purchase these 60 sets on Amazon that will give each student a sturdy, new set.
