What will be done with my students
Generation Genius is a district approved resource that students and teachers can access through Canvas Resources. A subscription to the math section of the website includes entertaining, kid-approved videos, lesson plans, discussion questions, vocabulary activities, math themed reading passages, practice number problems, practice word problems, assessments, and even games. The content relates directly to 5th grade math curriculum which includes topics such as volume, adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators, order of operations, converting units of measurement, place value, 2D and 3D shapes, division and so much more.
If this subscription was purchased for us, a math teacher could use the video to introduce her lesson as an engagement piece, to summarize/review content taught in class, as remediation or extensions, or even to flip the classroom! The activities associated with each video would be used to help students discuss concepts, practice skills, and consolidate learned knowledge. Another exciting feature is that the content on this website spans from grades K-6. This could be used to help each teacher differentiate based on student needs to either help fill in gaps in knowledge or help accelerate knowledge in the advanced sections. For example, a struggling student could go back and watch a 2nd grade place value video to learn the basics while a gifted student could access a 6th grade place value chart to help take them beyond content they’ve already mastered and prepare them for middle school. This website could be used daily within our math classrooms due to the plethora of resources available with a subscription.
Benefits to my students
Our 5th grade students love math! Many of them are visual learners. The only issue is that teachers do not have access to high quality kid-friendly math videos to keep students engaged with the content. As we are teaching 21st century learners who can watch videos on anything and everything using their phones and computers, it would be incredibly beneficial if they could access videos aligned to our 5th grade math content.
A Generation Genius math subscription would allow teachers to increase student engagement with grade level math content. Collier County Public Schools already pays for a science subscription to this website and the kids love it! Each year, students at Parkside Elementary score very well on their state science assessment compared to their state math assessment. For example, for the FY23 school year, 69% of 5th graders at PSE showed proficiency on their science assessment compared to only 59% of students showing proficiency in math. Generation Genius was used in those science classrooms for each unit of study. I believe the use of this program for math content could increase our state assessment scores.
Videos and lesson plans on the Generation Genius platform are aligned with the content we teach in class, which is based on state benchmarks and standards. Assessments for math will continue to be the district provided assessments. However, it is the goal that the scores on these assessments (exit tickets, mid unit assignments, and end of unit tests) will increase as a result of increased student engagement (using Generation Genius) during math instruction.
Budget Narrative
Each yearly teacher subscription is $225. We have two math teachers on our grade level who would like access to Generation Genius.
