Goal

Our goal is to explore Australia’s colorful culture and document, through art, the unique animals that live there. We will study the numerous biomes in Australia and explore Aboriginal dot painting.

Category

School supplies - Markers, paints, paper, crayons, clay, pencils, sharpies, modeling dough, etc.

What will be done with my students

Each grade level will begin by learning legends of the Indigenous people of Australia. They will view their native “dot” style of painting and learn about the symbolism. Next, they will use maps of Australia to show the locations where peculiar animals live and explain why they are so unique. Kindergarten and first grade will explore Australian animals and their young. After, they will create painted paper collages of baby Australian animals. Second and third grade students will focus on animals that live primarily in trees. They will discuss characteristics of each animal and explain why they are well suited for life in the trees. They will paint lizards, koalas, and other animals who make the forest their home. Fourth and fifth grade students will research the continent of Australia and discuss how it separated from Gondwana 60 million years ago. Students will also choose an animal from one of the habitats in the vast continent of Australia. They will investigate how the animal has adapted to the climate of the area. Finally, students will paint the Australian animal of their choice, using tempera. All the grade levels will use the “dot” method of painting to create a border and frame.

Benefits to my students

Our students will increase their knowledge of ecosystems and will further understand habitats and how they affect animals living there. Investigation and discussion about Australian animals will generate curiosity about interesting and strange animals and help prepare them for future science courses while reinforcing craftmanship and composition.
