Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

We have a dream to create an immersive sensory room at our school, designed to engage and delight students with significant cognitive, behavioral, and medical disabilities, enhancing their overall learning experience. The goal of the project is to teach students how to handle their emotions in an appropriate way. This project will help students learn how to self-calm when they are feeling too excited, angry, frustrated, sad, or any other big emotions. Students will know how to self-regulate as they navigate through different emotions, building their resilience skills and thriving in the process.

What will be done with my students

I am looking for an engaging way to teach social awareness and self-regulation skills to students with disabilities. Because of the wide range of both ages and abilities in our school, we need a variety of sensory activities and sizes. This project will benefit the students by allowing them to have access to materials that will allow them sensory stimulation through touching and have hands on access to materials that will allow them to stay calm. The fidget boxes will be a reward system where the students can earn prizes/additional time for their appropriate actions and behaviors in small groups.

Benefits to my students

Students at my school come with a wide range of abilities, interests, and needs. Many of these students have difficulty regulating their behavior. The expected outcome is for this space to help students stay motivated and stimulated, so they can focus and stay engaged in learning. Students will become independent in taking breaks and finding the tools that are right for them. The Sensory Lair will be a resort area for the students to retreat to, so they can focus on their learning while still being in close proximity to their peers. Baseline data collected so far this school year show that the Sensory Room area that has started, has been visited on an average of 17 times per week by approximately 15% of students. Once the room is complete with age and size appropriate activities, we anticipate the room to be used by an average increase of 75% amount of time and 30% of students.

Budget Narrative

Various sensory room items to complete a safe room for our students. Ordering through Amazon is most cost effective because some items can be ordered with free delivery on Prime. Most items are x2 due to destructibility and multiple students at one time using space.
