Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

The goal of this project is to provide middle school students at Franklin Middle Magnet School with professional-grade camera equipment to foster a love for photography, enhance artistic skills, and preserve the school's history as we celebrate its 100th anniversary. By integrating photography into the curriculum, we aim to develop students' creative and technical abilities, encourage historical documentation, and promote a deeper connection to the school community.

This project is measurable through both qualitative and quantitative methods. We will conduct pre- and post-project assessments to evaluate students' knowledge of photography, historical understanding, and artistic expression. We will also measure the body of work in photographs taken, exhibited, and published to determine the project's impact on student engagement and participation.

What will be done with my students

This project will involve purchasing professional-grade camera equipment for use in photography workshops, art classes, and history projects. Students will learn the basics of photography, including camera operation, composition, lighting, and editing. The project will span the entire academic year, becoming a permanent part of the school's art and history curriculum.

The planned timeline includes:

September - October 2024: Introduction to photography and camera equipment; training sessions for students and teachers.
November 2024 - February 2025: Integration of photography in art and history lessons; students capture images related to school life, history, and community.
March - April 2025: Photo editing and curation workshops; students create exhibits and digital archives.
May 2025: Culminating event showcasing students' work during the school's 100th anniversary celebration.
The project is directly aligned with the learning curriculum. In art classes, students will develop visual literacy, creativity, and technical skills, while in history classes, they will engage in documenting and preserving the school's legacy. Students will benefit academically by developing research, storytelling, and critical thinking skills as they learn to communicate narratives through visual media. This project will also provide educational enrichment by offering students an opportunity to explore potential careers in photography, journalism, and digital media.

Benefits to my students

The expected outcomes of this project include:

Skill Development: At least 80% of participating students will show a measurable improvement in photography skills, as evidenced by pre- and post-assessment scores (targeting a 20% increase).

Enhanced Engagement: We anticipate a 25% increase in student engagement in art and history classes, measured by class participation rates and project completion rates.

Community and Historical Awareness: Students will create a digital archive of at least 500 photographs documenting the school’s 100-year history and present-day activities. This will serve as a historical resource and be accessible to the school community.

Exhibition of Work: By May 2025, students will have curated a photography exhibition to be displayed during the school’s centennial celebrations, showcasing their work and historical documentation efforts.

Progress will be measured through pre- and post-tests, project rubrics, participation rates, and feedback surveys from students, teachers, and community members.
