Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

Last year, Galaxy Middle School's administrative and counseling teams joined forces to mentor students. They successfully reached twelve students identified through the Early Warning System (EWS), but each staff member worked independently using their own expertise to mentor their assigned students. Our goal for this year is to reach a larger number of EWS students through a more systematic and consistent mentoring approach. Ms. Stemberger LaRussa and I collaborated over the summer to create a “playbook” for mentors. This year, approximately 40 staff members are volunteering to mentor 50 EWS students. Our aim is for these students to feel supported, cared for, and connected to someone on campus. The COSMOS program directly supports our School Improvement Plan (SIP) goal by helping students achieve academic success.

What will be done with my students

Each potential mentee’s parent was contacted via email and invited to participate in the program. A training session was held for staff members volunteering as mentors. Each mentor will meet with their student weekly to complete an academic check-in and engage in fun, energetic, or activities tailored to creating a positive mentor/mentee relationship that are also designed to benefit each EWS academically and social-emotionally. At the beginning of each quarter, the mentor will guide the mentee in setting goals and creating an action plan to achieve them. A celebration will be held at the end of the year to honor the students' progress.

Benefits to my students

Students qualify for the EWS program for various reasons, including suspensions, poor attendance, failing grades in ELA or math, receiving a level 1 in ELA or math assessments, or being retained in a grade. Each mentor will focus on the specific challenges that qualified their mentee for EWS. To support our SIP goal, mentors will work with their students to maintain academic progress and set goals for assessments.

Budget Narrative

The total COSMOS program budget is $1,342.93, however, we have contributed $457.24 through a combination of personal funds, school funds, and business support towards the COSMOS budget. We are requesting the remaining $885.69 through this mini-grant, which will cover the costs of essential program materials such as folders for organizing forms, printing and binding the mentor playbook, conversation cards, beach balls with discussion prompts, dice, supplies for a winter craft, mentor notebooks and pens, fidget devices, index cards for flashcards, and bonding tokens.
