It is time for teachers to equip themselves with the tools necessary to aid ALL students where they are and bring them to another level. "Breaking Barriers" is an initiative that will allow our teachers to instruct the entire class while simultaneously translating for our ELL students.

Goal

With the growing ELL population within our school, it is clear that our campus translator can not be everyone at once. It is time for teachers to equip themselves with the tools necessary to aid ALL students where they are and bring them to another level. "Breaking Barriers" is an initiative that will allow our teachers to instruct the entire class while simultaneously translating for our ELL students.

Learning Aids - Sunshine state book sets, robotics kits, puzzle boards, science models, engineering supplies, etc. 

 

What will be done with my students

Students will participate in a series of group activities to test these new devices' translating capabilities. Starting with the teacher, the students will experience real-time translations to move away from "side instruction" that would waste time in the classroom. We will proceed to group activities once the teacher-led activity results prove fruitful. Allowing students to experience the interaction capabilities of the devices with their peers. The objective is to boost the confidence of our young scholars to interact with the general population in and out of the classroom. Lastly, this will push into the annual concert. Students usually have the opportunity to speak at the concerts to showcase what they learned all year. This device will prove to be the tool the students need to "Break Barriers" that would have prohibited them from doing so. The results of this initiative will be used to determine if this method could be beneficial throughout the entire campus. 

 

Benefits to my students

My students are segregated in the classroom, in the hallways, and throughout the campus of our school. Their language barrier has caused time to be wasted, resources to be wasted and more energy to be used on translating in "hopes" that the student, or family, understands. I want to provide our students with a bridge to communicate their thoughts, emotions, and endeavors with me, their peers, and others. Not just the ELL population will be affected. Students who may not understand what is being said around them and classes that waste time on the same content while waiting for their peers to have a translated version will be affected positively.
