Goal
We would like to take our second graders to Cracker Country for a field trip in the Spring. The goal of our project is to enrich the academic lives of our students and help to cultivate their learning by immersing them in a historical experience about the state of Florida and helping them to understand economics.
Category

What will be done with my students
Students will attend a place called Cracker Country for a field trip and can discover the daily lives of Florida’s pioneers. “Spend the morning immersed in a rural Florida community of the past and learn how a late 19th century rural family survived. Try your hand at farm and household chores, explore community buildings and learn the skills of Florida’s pioneers. Students will take back to their modern world knowledge of the differences and similarities between their lives and those of children in 1898. All groups will dip a candle, visit our train station and shop in our Cracker Country General Store.”
The project will benefit students because it immerses them into the lives of our ancestors and helps them to understand important educational standards such as,
Florida State Standards:
Beginning Economics
SS.2.E.1.1 Recognize that people make choices because of limited resources.
SS.2.E.1.2 Recognize that people supply goods and services based on consumer demands.
Chronological Thinking:
SS.2.A.3.1 Identify terms and designations of time sequence.
This is a one-time activity that occurs in second grade, and it helps to benefit them academically because it informs them of Florida history, skills and trades needed for living and provided them with a mini-lesson on consuming and producing goods to survive. They will get an opportunity to bring home a nice homemade gift which helps them to appreciate the little things. The only way to participate in this experience is through a field trip. It provides not only educational enrichment but helps them to improve their social skills by interacting with adults and their peers in a less structured environment.
Benefits to my students
The expected outcome for this field trip and what the grant will accomplish is to provide opportunities for our students that they wouldn’t typically be privy to because they are at a Title 1 school and a lot of them are not even from this country. We want to enhance academic achievement in our students. We want to improve their knowledge of history, help them learn about economics and increase their vocabulary skills. We will measure this by providing a pretest to our students and then after the field trip, a post-test that will hopefully show an increase in their academic knowledge of the standards and subjects we are trying to help them learn. Once the field study is conducted and completed, students will increase their vocabulary skills, knowledge of history, and awareness of economics by 20%.
Budget Narrative
The budget for this project is as follows:
Field Trip cost is $10 per student plus an additional $2-$5 for the add-on souvenir packet (our kids or their families don’t have a lot of money and we don’t want anyone to feel bad if they can purchase something in the general store so it would be nice to give them something from the experience without making them feel bad or giving them a budgeted amount that they are able to spend).
There is a $75 non-refundable deposit due when booking the field trip.
One adult (teacher or chaperone) per ten students is required and admitted for free. Additional adults pay the rate of $14 each. *We would need one additional chaperone.
Materials for pre & post tests $20
Bus transportation: (2 buses needed) $30 per hour (4 hours each bus), $1.75 per mile (11 miles each way, 22 round trip each bus)
66 students (66 x $15 = $990), 4 teachers and 3 chaperones ($14), $75 non-refundable deposit, test materials $20, bus transportation $317
Total cost: $1,416.00
