Goal

Burns Middle School has started a Family and Consumer Science Culinary course. We have not had one in 15 years. We are starting from scratch! My students are involved in the FCCLA which is the ultimate Leadership Experience! We will participate in cooking competitions at the District level and hopefully state level if we qualify. Kids are learning to bake and cook but we do not have the proper tools. Students will take a pretest on baking using mixers. Throughout the year they will learn to bake several items and then take a post test at the end of the year to see how their skills have improved.

What will be done with my students

This project will benefit approximately 180 students as they navigate learning how to cook in our kitchens. They are learning real life skills that will carry them through life. My hope is that they love Family and Consumer Science so much that it guides them into a career.

Students will spend time in our 5 classroom kitchens learning kitchen skills. They will prepare and cook many things using mixers. Students will attend county FCCLA events and hopefully score well enough that they can move forward to State and possibly even National events.

Our kids are literally starting from scratch! We have been gaining donation items from our community. They have supplied us with pots and pans, bakeware, tongs, spoons, potholders and many other items. The hard part has been large item donations. I am working with a small budget to purchase for them to cook and don't have much left over for large items such as the mixers.  

 

Benefits to my students

I predict that students will score low on an October given pretest. Most of my students have not spent a lot of time in a kitchen and the majority have never used a tool like this before. I predict that 75% of my students will increase their scores to 80% or higher on a posttest in May of this school year.
