Goal
I work with many struggling readers who have repeated a grade and they feel deflated when they encounter text and reading activities. Many of these students have low confidence in regards to their reading and writing ability.
I establish individualized, realistic expectations for my students and I would like to encourage them to keep trying and taking risks. When students attain a goal, they are given verbal praise but for some students extrinsic rewards are also helpful. This grant is a request for rewards for reading when literacy goals are attained.
Category
School-Wide, Grade-Level, Or Class Events/Programs - Parent Nights, Honor Roll Celebrations, EOY Events, etc.
What will be done with my students
All students currently have attainable literacy goals set weekly. Though I expect my students to have intrinsic motivation to improve their reading ability; our treasure box is also a great motivation. I would like funds to smelly pencils, neon pens, fun bookmarks fidgets for anxiety, and healthy snacks to encourage motivation and promote literacy as a "fun" activity. I would like to have snacks for students; many students are hungry during lessons. I would like students to regard reading as a fun and social activity.
Benefits to my students
I want my students to change their outlook on reading. Many of my students are hesitant and have negative feelings towards reading and writing tasks. I want my students to regard reading in a positive, fun light.
