Goal

Our goal is to conduct a service-learning project that will provide a holiday gift for the pre-k students at Forrest Hills Elementary. Each of the pre-k students will receive a handmade blanket from our 12 Plus ESE students at Chamberlain High School.

School supplies - Markers, paints, paper, crayons, clay, pencils, sharpies, modeling dough, etc.

What will be done with my students

The project benefits the 12 Plus program students because it is teaching them valuable skills to prepare them for life after exiting high school. The 12 plus program includes students that have deferred after graduating and are working on vocational and life skills to make sure they are ready to obtain employment and work towards independency once they are done with the deferment. They are working as a team to measure, cut, and tie blankets which will better prepare them for future jobs. They are also learning the value in giving back to their community. Most of the students in the 12 plus program also attended Forrest Hills so they are giving back to the school they attended. The project should take them around a month and will be given as a holiday gift.

Benefits to my students

The students in the 12 plus program will be expected to see improvements in their vocational skills during this project which is the main objective in the program. By working together to create the blankets they will improve communication and collaboration. They will also improve their fine motor skills while cutting, tying, and creating the blankets. These are skills that can be applied to various jobs they might seek out after exiting the 12 plus program. They will also improve their math skills by measuring the fabric and sections so that the blankets are neat and consistent. This is also beneficial to obtaining future employment.

Each student by the end of the project should be able to:

Measure and cut two-inch strips accurately in 4 out of opportunities to improve math and fine motor skills.

Improve collaboration and communication skills with peers and adults by asking for help when needed, directing peers, and working together appropriately in 4 out of 5 opportunities.
