What will be done with my students

This grant will provide ongoing support for students with learning experiences and integrated lessons that can build upon each other year after year. Through teaching lessons on specific thinking skills and strategies, specifically visual-spatial and analytical thinking, students will learn a myriad of higher-order thinking skills they can meaningfully apply to the ever-growing repertoire of online LEGO SPIKE Prime units and lessons. These skills include teaching students how to perceive and represent visual information, mentally manipulate objects within space, as well as think scientifically, systematically, and logically about questions and problems. Thinking skills lessons will be taught in tandem with LEGO SPIKE Prime lessons to support thinking and problem solving.

The LEGO Spike Prime kits will provide a dynamic opportunity for students to engage in collaborative, project-based learning that emphasizes problem-solving in the STEM disciplines. Specific benefits include enrichment through project- and problem-based learning, enhancing teamwork and communication, promoting critical thinking and resilience, and encouraging real-world connections. The hands-on nature of the project encourages students to learn from failures and adapt their strategies, fostering resilience and a growth mindset.

This project will also advance equity in gifted education by blending enrichment with opportunities for talent development. By integrating talent development strategies, the project will provide all students with differentiated tasks that match their abilities while fostering growth in teamwork, creativity, and leadership.

Benefits to my students

Expected outcomes for gifted and potentially gifted students include but are not limited to:

1. Demonstrate improved proficiency in robotics and programming by designing, building, and coding functional robots to complete specific challenges, meeting predefined performance criteria (e.g., navigating a maze or automating a task).

2. Apply visual-spatial and analytical thinking skills to troubleshoot and iterate on designs.

3. Effectively collaborate in teams by dividing roles, sharing responsibilities, communicating, and resolving conflicts during group robotics projects.

4. Increase student engagement and motivation

5. Increase student achievement in core subject areas

6. Increase creativity and task commitment (talent development)

Pre- and post-tests will be administered to assess student knowledge and skills in the areas of programming, robotics, visual-spatial and analytical thinking skills. Student perceptions of team collaboration will be measured via pre- and post-project surveys. The goal is to see an increase of 70% by May of 2025 from the baseline measures.
