Goal
I am learning my students have a different learning styles. The old fashion way of passive learning is archaic and doesn't work for this generation. They are active learners. In a recent team building activity, I saw my students really benefit from moving around the classroom. Their hands on nature would really benefit from adding one or two rotating white boards to our classroom. We only have one white board in our room, which is covered by a Newline Board. The Newline Board is a great resource but a very expensive one. I want something that is accessible for them to gravitate towards. These two white boards would give the students and I more opportunity to discuss, question, answer and think in class instead of the old passive way. So, I feel having these two boards would really help in the interaction between themselves and myself with guided instruction.
For example, the results from the recent team building activity with the accessibility to move around and use the present materials, I saw 20-30% jump on a recent test. My students are hands on learners from what I am seeing again. I feel they can increase this another 10-20% with dedicated time using these whiteboards under planned lessons throughout the rest of the year and on the EOC Civics Exam.

What will be done with my students
This project would help give the students another medium for explaining and demonstrating what they know. The whiteboards would allow for more interaction, another medium to express themselves. I remember when I was a student. I had an instructor who used these boards for projects, discussions and competitions. We could also use these boards for memorization for more vocabulary, key events and court cases. I teach Civics at Tomlin and this subject is so important to their mental development in our community as informed citizens. This addition to my room would be welcomed so greatly. I have tried to find anything I can to help the facilitation of learning.
There are three ideas I have thought of to use with these white boards are one, I want to create a tree for the three branches of government. On each tree, the students and I can use "leaves"/ labeled with what each branch does to show the growth of the tree and American government. This tree idea would at the completion of the three branches unit, probably end of January. Another idea is for the court cases, we will cover. I want to set up a plaintiff and defense court case. I want the students to use the boards to set up their arguments to try to change the ruling on the case. It would generate a lot of healthy discussion for them to think, why? how? This lesson plan would be mid-February. The last idea is to have the kids use it to answer daily questions as soon as they enter the classroom on material, what is the NJ Plan? What is social contract? Who are the two English thinkers whom impacted American thinking? The last idea is to we will continue to review information new and old in preparation for the EOC Civics Exam. The two white boards would be great addition.
I have asked for white boards for my room from my school and administration but unfortunately, there are no available to use. My classroom doesn't possess the additional resource I am asking for.
Benefits to my students
My expectations are the students will be shown that there are people out there who care about their future. These resources would give my students every opportunity to grow especially in their educational and mental makeup. My students come from low-income families with little resources. I already come to the Hillsborough Foundation twice a year to gather more resources to help their educational needs from notebooks, paper, pens, and pencils. some of the volunteers/ workers such Heidi and Aimee suggested this grant to help. Again though, I feel there can be an at least 10-20% increase in test scores for my students in class during their grading periods and more importantly, a passing grade on the EOC Civics exam. They showed to me on the last test by simply moving around and using what they had. Adding this resource would be great to all of us. I can share the boards with other instructors for use and presentations. Again, this kind gesture would be a great representation and example for our students to give back to the community especially when in times of need.
