What will be done with my students
80% of students living in poverty lose their reading milestones due to a lack of grade level reading materials. Each year, I have been able to close this gap by providing consistent access to literature on grade level to students.
Most students living in poverty do not have consistent access to role models that demonstrate how being able to read can change the paradigm in their lives. Low literacy skills can hinder these students potential throughout their lifetime.
The factors that contribute to these deficits are the lack of fathers in the home, frequent movement of homes and schools, and the lack of access to enjoyable grade level texts.
I cannot fix every mitigating factor, but with the support of this grant I can provide books that are both engaging and accessible.
Please support the dream of putting books into the hands of students so they will not be a part of this alarming and depressing reality. Your funding will be both appreciated and put to good use. When we teach students to read proficiency, they will earn more money and have better opportunities over the course of their lifetime. Additionally, once a poverty cycle has been broken, the likeliness of their children being raised in poverty is diminished.
Benefits to my students
Every student will have access to at least 5 novels throughout the year that we can read as a class. Having a book in their hand both provides exposure and visual support to enhance reading fluency, comprehension, and builds background knowledge.
This class began at 22% of the group being proficient in reading. Currently, using some the of the library in stock, research based district approved curriculum, and consistent small group instruction, we are currently 35% proficient at the halfway mark and 80% of the class has made gains since the beginning of school.
They are making great progress but need more access to books to push to proficiency. Using these books, I project that we will be at 80% proficiency and 100% of the class will make academic gains, including those whose language is other than English and students with disabilities, by May 2025.
When students read on grade level or higher, every other academic subject in enhanced. In addition, the likeliness that of eliminating the poverty trend that they currently are experiencing is significantly reduced.
If all students in low-income countries acquired basic reading skills, an estimated 171 million people could escape extreme poverty, highlighting the transformative power of literacy.
