Goal

The goal of this project is to initiate Beanstack Reading Challenges and provide rewards for students who accept the challenge, read, and meet or exceed expectations. Ultimately, we hope to increase the amount of time students spend reading independently and increase their reading proficiency.

What will be done with my students

Many students are not motivated to read on their own. We hope that by offering rewards for time spent reading or being read to, that students will want to pick up a book and read in tier free time. With skills like riding a bike, playing video games, or hitting a baseball, it takes practice to improve. Reading is no different. It takes practice to become a better reader. And some kids need an extra push to practice. 

 

Benefits to my students

Our expectation is that students reading skills and test scores will improve with added independent time spent reading. During the second semester of the 2024-25 school year, we hope to raise the ELA PM2 proficiency scores of Chiaramonte students by 10-16%, as measured by ELA PM3 given in May of 2025.
Our current proficiency scores and goals are:
1st grade 34% to 50%
2nd grade 19% to 35%
3rd grade 26% to 40%
4th grade 40% to 50 %
5th grade 37% to 50%
We also hope that initially the rewards will be the motivator, but then the enjoyment that reading brings, will create readers for life.  

 

Budget Narrative

Candy and cookies will be purchased from Walmart.
Bookmarks will be purchased from Lakeshore Learning.
The other items will come from Dollar Tree to maximize the amount we can purchase.
