Goal

I teach high school science to 50 students with profound autism. 75% of my students are non-verbal. I would like to provide them with some hands on science activities so that they can demonstrate their learning in a different manner.

What will be done with my students

This project will help my students to learn science with hands on activities. There are 3 different science classes that would benefit from this project; Earth and Space Science, Physical Science, and Biology. All of the children in my classes are on an adjusted curriculum (access points is the name of it) for their ability. This adjusted curriculum gives them a better chance to learn about science and these hands on activities will really allow them to show what they have learned. Since my students are primarily non-verbal and struggle with writing, this gives them a real chance to show what they are learning and all the internal pride that goes with that. 

 

Benefits to my students

Currently, 75% of our children are receiving a D or an F on their report cards for science, simply because they are non-verbal and unable to write an answer. These supplies will give the children another way to show that they are learning, by actually doing the science. I expect that our grades will improve so that less than 50% of the children will receive a D or an F on their next report card.
