Goal
My goal is to provide each student a copy of the Storyworks magazine by Scholastic. The magazine is published 6 times a year. Storyworks increases student engagement and exposes students to high interest grade level articles about current events, presented in a variety of genres while aligning to the Florida B.E.S.T. standards. What will be done with my students
Every issue of Storyworks is packed with skill-building resources, engaging activities and authentic stories to support a variety of learning styles and reading levels.
The following features are included in each issue and align with grade level B.E.S.T. standards in ELA.
1."Up Close" boxes that set a purpose for reading and prompt students to focus on one important reading skill per story.
2. Writing prompts that accompany every major article to provide authentic writing tasks.
3. In-magazine activities that help students hone vocabulary, grammar, and opinion-writing skills—and have fun while doing it.
4. Online skill-building activity sheets that introduce and reinforce key ELA skills such as text evidence, main idea and supporting details, inferencing, and more in our comprehensive Core Skills Workouts.
These features will provide differentiated instruction to assist with remediation for learners needing more time to master the ELA standards as well as enrichment for other students needing to expand their thinking and reading and writing skills to push them to an above level test score.
These highly engaging articles can also propel students to a life time of a love for literacy.
Benefits to my students
The student's progress will be monitored using the district provided spotlight quizzes which are administered every two weeks. The state FAST assessment of learning is also administered three times a year. Earning a 65% on a spotlight is similar to a 3 on FAST. Earning a 3 on FAST is considered proficient. I expect that by building a love for reading, beefing up background knowledge and providing this extra practice with standards, that all of my students will demonstrate growth in reading proficiency. I expect that EOY, my lower quartile students will earn at least 65% on 3 our of 4 spotlights. I expect 75% of my students to make at least 20 points gains on EOY FAST.
