Goal

The goal of this project to provide a variety of sensory tools and equipment for students with various exceptionalities to utilize on a daily basis. Sensory tools that would benefit our students with sensory processing issues include sensory swings, light tables, sensory pods for calming pressure, play tubes for climbing.

What will be done with my students

Many students at our school struggle with sensory processing issues and greatly benefit from the opportunity to explore sensory enrichment activities including jumping, swinging, climbing, deep pressure sensory input like crashing onto a safely padded area, and exploring a variety of textures, lights, and sounds through fidgets. When students with sensory processing issues spend the majority of their day in a busy classroom environment, their attention and focus skills are taxed with regulating their bodies and controlling their emotions. The Sensory Room provides a safe outlet for expelling energy, exploring different sensations, or soothing the nervous system through calming activities in a quiet and less stimulating environment.  

 

Benefits to my students

By utilizing the Sensory Room for breaks throughout the day, our students can increase their academic participation and focus skills by 15%. Students who visit the Sensory Room also have the opportunity for targeted practice of social skills, communication skills, and independent functioning skills. In a test group, students who visited the Sensory Room for breaks demonstrated improvement in functional language skills in at least 4 out of 5 opportunities, including requesting desired items and protesting undesirable behaviors.
