Goal
Hillsborough Virtual School K-12 (HVK12) offers full-time students the opportunity to come together monthly for what is called STAR Lab days. STAR Lab stands for Student Teacher Academic Resource Lab. The goal of this project is to be able to purchase science-based lab equipment for students to participate in engaging experiments to further their understanding of and excitement for physical science, chemistry and physics.
To begin with more rigorous, rich lessons and lab activities, it would be a blessing to be able to purchase density kits for students and teachers to work with for lab activities related to physical science, chemistry and physics.

What will be done with my students
The STAR Lab in-person lesson activities offer students the chance to meet their peers and teachers and have that socialization time to feel connected with others at school.
Additionally, this is a time for enrichment lessons and an opportunity for additional instruction for students who may need extra help on various topics. We would like to help promote a love of science and STEM-related topics for our students. With the supplemental equipment and lab kits, we can provide engaging learning experiences for our students. When the parents take the time to bring their students to campus for monthly STAR Lab lessons, we want to be sure the lessons are worthwhile and that students come away from the day having learned and applied some concepts that will serve them well going forward on achievement assessments as well as in potential science-based careers.
Benefits to my students
Based on Florida state science standards related to properties of matter, middle school students should learn to differentiate between weight and mass (SC.8.P8.2) and explore and describe the densities of various material through measurement of their masses and volumes (SC.8.P8.3).
With the equipment known as density kits, teachers can guide students in hands-on experiments related to measuring and calculating mass and volume.
This equipment can be used at school for multiple class groups to work with over a number of semesters. A class set of density kits would be ideal for this spring and subsequent semesters.
The experiments and studies that can be taught with density kits are numerous.
One expected outcome is that our full-time HVK12 students will ultimately be even better prepared for success on the progress monitoring (PM3) assessment for Grade 8 Science. This will be able to be measured by comparing previous years' 8th grade Science test scores to this end-of-year 2025 8th grade Science PM3 test scores.
