Find It Fund It Florida - Hillsborough Education Foundation

This project will allow Jackson Elementary students to experience for possibly the first time the creation of a scientific and beautiful work of art that will last them for life. Using the science of fluid dynamics and the art history of David Alfaro Siqueiros, a Mexican artist credited with exploration of the technique to be used by the scholars.

Project Goal

This project will allow Jackson Elementary students to experience for possibly the first time the creation of a scientific and beautiful work of art that will last them for life. Using the science of fluid dynamics and the art history of David Alfaro Siqueiros, a Mexican artist credited with exploration of the technique to be used by the scholars.

How Project Benefits Students

Most of the scholars at Jackson have limited access to funds for art supplies or science experiment supplies. This grant will supply the means for all students to experience this for possibly the first time. When a denser fluid rest atop a less dense one, the top fluid wants to move downward, causing the two fluids to mix. Different colors of paint have different densities because of the varying compounds used to make pigments. In physics, this battle between densities is called a Rayleigh-Taylor instability, and it crops up in a number of areas outside of art. In astrophysics, for instance, exploding stars expel gases of varying densities, leading to the formation of Rayleigh-Taylor “fingers. Using cross-curriculum between science and art scholars create a visual art piece dedicated to exploration.

Expected Outcome(s)

Florida education standards to be explored:
VA.5.S.2.2: Identify sequential procedures to engage in art production.
VA.5.S.2.3: Visualize the end product to justify artistic choices of tools, techniques, and processes.
SC.5.N.2.2: Recognize and explain that when scientific investigations are carried out, the evidence produced by those investigations should be replicable by others.
As fluids of differing densities combine they form new and complex patterns. Using scientific principles scholars may repeat the experiment with predictable results.
