We need to get books into the hands of students who have been reluctant to read in the past, especially when they haven't seen characters or settings that reflect their own experiences - until now!
Launching a Project Lit chapter requires time and BOOKS! Thanks to my amazing principal and reading coach, students have already fallen in love with the book "Ghost" by Jason Reynolds. For the first time for some, they relate to the experiences and the thought processes of the main character in a book. Many of these students have a difficult time naming a favorite book from elementary school, because they have spent so little time reading. This project engages students as readers, builds community, and develops leaders!
A minimum of 25 students will be impacted by these books. We will begin Project Lit with one class, and offer it as a club as well as we read the complete Track Series by Jason Reynolds. Students will take leadership roles within the club, promoting books to other classes and encouraging membership. The club will also conduct a service learning project throughout the year to raise funds for even more books. There is no limit as to how many students and teachers can be impacted by starting this club on the right foot!
