How Project Benefits Students

Theater is a unique, immersive learning experience that teaches students skills that far expand the perimeter of the stage. Through our school’s production of the Lion King, participating students will have the opportunity to actively develop the following skills:

Empathy - Whether watching a play or jumping onto the stage and acting, when students portray a character in a storyline, they learn to “walk a mile in someone else’s shoes”. Being a part of these kinds of experiences can help my students view the complex world from new perspectives and frame new settings for experiencing empathy and compassion for others.

Develop Teamwork Skills - Being involved in a school production helps students learn to work as a team to attain goals together.

Gain Exposure to Culture & Arts - Theater is a great way to introduce my students to classic fairy tales, short stories, and even poetry.

Practice Public-Speaking - By practicing various theatre games or acting, my students build the confidence to stand in front of a group and feel comfortable.

Learn Problem-Solving Skills - Creating theater helps my students activate the creative parts of the brain which, like a muscle, encourages that creativity to get stronger and stronger. Having a strong creative side helps with problem solving and encourages children to think objectively.

Expected Outcome(s)

As a result of grant funding, Muller’s Theater Department will be equipped to produce a quality production of the Lion King. Students who participate in the production will be afforded a unique learning opportunity to learn through the arts by taking on new perspectives, practicing working as a team, honing public-speaking skills, and gaining cultural exposure. In many ways, our school production will have a positive impact beyond the students who participate in it. Muller’s school play has historically been a source of great pride that draws the school body together including families and community members. Our school’s production of the Lion King will help to reinforce school spirit while also promoting a sense of community.
