This project hopes to connect world history students at Steinbrenner High School to local community issues that connect to broader patterns of history through local historic preservation and civic engagement. Students will be establishing a preservation project at Rose Hill Cemetery, one of the few remaining intact segregated African American cemeteries in the Tampa Bay area. The goal of the project is to preserve the graves and grounds of this historic cemetery. Through this experience, students will engage in civic and community education , learn more about the rich African American history of the local community, and learn about how the local Tampa Bay area history connects to world history.
This project benefits students in several ways. First, the project engages students in civic community education - allowing students to connect their education to issues in their community. Second, the project engages students in the process of historic preservation and archival research elevating their understanding of how history is recorded and preserved. Third, this project allows students to learn more about the rich history of the local African American community. This project will be permanently integrated in the world history curriculum and will allow students to better understand world history curriculum standards that addresses the African diaspora, immigration, WWI, WWII, the Vietnam War, and Desert Storm, as the cemetery is home to many local African American veterans.
Through this project, students at Steinbrenner High School will be able to continuously engage in community development and historic inquiry. Steinbrenner High School has a robust and collaborative social studies department and this project provides an opportunity for cross curricular learning for students and teachers.
These items are necessary to establish a community based learning project that helps connect students to the history of their local community.
