Project Goal

To provide all 5th grade students with their own disposable black and white film camera that they will use to capture documentary style photographs in their personal lives, inspired by the African American photographer Andre Wagner.

How Project Benefits Students

This project benefits students by giving them a creative outlet away from school to focus their free time on. It teaches them not only the importance of documenting their lives, but also that documentation can become an art form. A 35mm film camera is foreign to most students and exposes them to an entirely new medium and process from taking the photos to developing the film which we will do ourselves. Photography and the arts help students to improve motor skills, language skills, social skills, decision making, risk taking, and nurture their inventiveness. The majority of our students at Potter are African American so the visibility of African American artists is a crucial part of art education, as it should be everywhere. By using Andre Wagner as our inspiration the kids are able to participate in a culturally relevant project.

Expected Outcome(s)

The outcome of this project will be hundreds of amazing black and white film photographs to display in our school as well as online for the community to see our students work. Our students will gain a sense of independence and pride to bring their work to life. The hope is we build a lifelong love of photography in our students along with an appreciation for the importance of photographs in regards to history and the vast world of art.

Detailed Cost Summary

We will need disposable black and white film cameras for each of the 5th graders to take home. We also need the developer and fixer chemicals in order to develop the film, and money for prints to give to the students as well as hang in the gallery on campus.
