Find It Fund It Florida - Hillsborough Education Foundation

My goal is to create a "Wellness Library" in the Wellness Room I created last year.

The room is a space where students can go to calm down, practice relaxation strategies, and work on counseling goals.

I want to outfit the room with a solid collection of books related to Wellness and Mental Health topics. I think children's books are a great tool for helping kids explore tough topics in a friendly and engaging way.

My goal is to curate a collection of books that represent the diversity of my students and the communities in which they live. Books would speak to topics including self-esteem, anti-racism, resilience, feelings, friendships, and social skills.

Project Goal

My goal is to create a "Wellness Library" in the Wellness Room I created last year.

The room is a space where students can go to calm down, practice relaxation strategies, and work on counseling goals.

I want to outfit the room with a solid collection of books related to Wellness and Mental Health topics. I think children's books are a great tool for helping kids explore tough topics in a friendly and engaging way.

My goal is to curate a collection of books that represent the diversity of my students and the communities in which they live. Books would speak to topics including self-esteem, anti-racism, resilience, feelings, friendships, and social skills.

How Project Benefits Students

Many of my students have experienced past traumas and come from families that live below the poverty line. They need support to deal with big feelings associated with trauma, loss, and poverty.

I want to curate a collection of books that I can read with my students to help them get insight and guidance on the wide span of challenges they might face.

Research tells us that when students are stressed, they become unavailable for learning. I want to use children's books as a resource to support students in learning new skills and managing big emotions. When students feel safe and supported, the are ready to learn.

Expected Outcome(s)

As a result of the Wellness Library, students will learn new skills to manage challenging situations. In effect, they will miss out on a smaller amount of valuable learning time.

The library will also work to support literacy and a love of reading. When students can "see" themselves in the books they read, they develop a greater appreciation for literature and love of reading that will last a lifetime.
