Spurlino Foundation - $299.00
The goal of this project is to provide my students with evidence-based tools to improve their ability to succeed in their classrooms and community by improving fundamental language skills.
As a speech-language pathologist, I work with a school caseload of at least 100 students who have delayed receptive and expressive language skills. The students range from preschool through fifth grade and have impaired oral language skills. These difficulties directly impact their academic progress in the classroom.
In order for children to be able to learn to read and write, they need to have solid listening and speaking skills. This program will benefit my students because it specifically targets important language skills that my students need in order to be successful learners. In addition, it teaches the skills in an interactive and exciting way to engage all students. This project addresses the Standards for Speaking and Listening as well as the Reading Standards: Foundational Skills, which are both included in the Language Arts Florida Standards.
Another benefit of this program is that it allows students to complete activities individually, as the program adjusts the level of difficulty based on the students’ performance. It is appropriate to use with all elementary age students. In addition, the software is compatible with interactive smart boards; therefore, small groups of children can take turns completing activities while learning from and encouraging each other.
This evidence-based software program specifically targets multiple, important skills that my students are currently lacking. The program includes four main areas that work together and build the students’ foundational language skills, including: following directions, phonological awareness, auditory memory, and sequencing.
In order to be successful in the educational setting, students need to understand basic concepts. Following directions involving basic concepts is important for students to complete classroom activities and interact appropriately with others. Before children can learn to read, they must have speech sound awareness (phonological awareness skills). This involves being aware of the sounds that letters make in words, phrases, and sentences. Next, children must be able to remember and recall information they have learned. Students will improve their memory skills through strategic memory training for listening. After students master these skills, they use all the information they learned to work on essential language and literacy skills through the sequencing training.
This program will significantly benefit my students in the speech and language program and allow them to be effective communicators and learners within the classroom and community!
