Goal: Students will share what they know about weather through discussion about today's weather and ... Recording observations on a daily weather calendar introduces student to long-term data collection. ... incorporate science/weather into your day without having to create time. Students will develop a fundamental understanding of how weather works and be able to look at any present state in their environment and be able to make accurate predictions of what the weather will be in the near future thereby making cause and effect connections that will carry throughout their lives.
STEM Focused-Engineering Connection
Who cares about the weather? A lot of people do, including engineers! Engineers have designed modern weather forecasting equipment, including weather balloons, satellites, Doppler radar, and computer simulation programs to help meteorologists make accurate weather forecasts. Engineers have also designed the automatic weather station (AWS), which collects weather data automatically in remote areas such as the mountains or Antarctica. Engineers design and build the high-tech equipment that is used for weather forecasting. Other engineers contribute to weather forecasting equipment by designing the electronics, circuitry and software so the equipment can sense, measure and relay weather data accurately. This weather station will allow teachers to easily bring their class to the outdoor weather station, record the data as indicated on the display, or see the data displayed wirelessly via the morning show TV screen and then put learning in real time-making it relevant and meaningful. It will also reinforce a tangible understanding of what the actual weather instruments look like-all assessed vocabulary on the FSA. When students see a word like ANEMOMETER it can be intimidating but when students can actually see that instrument, it becomes less scary and comprehension is heightened leading to higher scores on assessment which leads to a higher school grade which leads to more funding and in turn, more resources for students in the short and long term.
Students will observe and make predictions about the weather using their senses and the clouds.
They will describe the relation between weather patterns and wind speed, air pressure, temperature and precipitation.
Students will make a weather forecast based on sensory observations, cloud characteristics and collected weather data over time thereby taking part in an ongoing long term investigation.
Students will then have the opportunity (depending on their Science teacher) to develop a model that describes how unequal heating of the Earth causes patterns of atmospheric and oceanic circulation that determine regional climates.
3 items to create a full outdoor weather station with wireless capability to upload to morning show screen for all teachers to view and utilize in their classrooms or to bring outside for data gathering and weather snapshots and observations.
