How Project Benefits Students

With all the current events going on in our society and keeping in mind that students are returning to school during a pandemic, the arts now more than ever, is an important piece of the puzzle that can help our children navigate their emotions with the help of social emotional learning or SEL. As teachers, we must meet the emotional needs of our students first so that we can move their learning forward. World Music Drumming A Cross-Cultural Curriculum by Will Schmid is an effective way to permanently incorporate SEL into the music classroom.

Our classroom is in need of various world drumming instruments to be used in conjunction with the World Music Drumming Cross- Cultural Curriculum. I hope you will consider funding this project. Here is what students have to say about the World Music Drumming curriculum and how it impacted their lives:

”I learned more about people and cultures in Africa. I have learned about the time and pride it takes…” Heather bader, 7th grade, Bothell WA

“I like that other people appreciate me when I play.”
-Adam Shilling, 7th grade, Bothell WA

“Learning how to play the drums is not the only thing we are being taught. We are discovering how to listen to each other and how to work together to achieve a goal. I think that learning good cooperation skills is a very necessary part of life. Listening to each other is a good thing to become accustomed to. We are learning to understand each other and accept everyone’s mistakes. I think we are all getting to know one another better. We are also finding out how to work and work on something until it gets to be the best it can be.” Michelle Merritz, student from Moultonborough NH

Here is what teacher's say:

"I am noticing an increase in the respect level of the students. They seem to be more attentive and focused on the lessons as well as more concerned with the welfare of the entire group." Debbie Montague, Seattle WA

"My greatest reward in this curriculum comes from seeing the marginalized students participating and being part of the group. I have seen one girl who has special needs who would not participate at all, blooming. When we did the call and response yesterday, she played patterns she had never done before, and the class broke out in applause." -Annie Eisenberg, Moultonborough NH

Expected Outcome(s)

Communicate better with fellow students, understand and demonstrate the value and techniques of cooperative teamwork, demonstrate techniques for playing various types of drums and other percussion equipment, sing songs with percussion and other instruments from various multicultural traditions, improvise musically, create musically, listen actively and critically to various styles of music which include percussion, have greater respect of the people represented by the traditions studied, understand how music reflects similar cultural themes and patterns found in art, dance, literature, social patterns, work, etc. of the cultures studied.
