Project Goal

This project will increase reading comprehension, writing and critical thinking skills for all third graders, while also supporting global integration and concept-based instruction. Furthermore, this project will support student growth across all domains, since the ability to read and synthesize information is an important skill regardless of subject area.

How Project Benefits Students

Literacy Footprints is a small group, differentiated, and diverse guided reading system that contains authentic and high-quality leveled texts. I teach at a Title I school with a high English Language Learner population. My students deserve the best small group system that is available. We meet daily for small group instruction and the grant will support all third grade reading and writing standards.
The literacy footprints system allows me, their teacher, to tailor our small group reading and writing instruction to my students’ interests and skills. It provides me the tools to differentiate, take formative assessments, while also supporting educational enrichment and extension activities. It will be used not just for one year, but for many more to come.
Above all, the system is research based and employs best reading instruction practices for face to face, small group instruction. All of my students benefit from the literacy footprints books because the texts cover a variety of genres. My kids will encounter traditional tales, realistic fiction, fantasy, and informational text. But most importantly, the literacy footprints texts feature diverse characters and a global perspective, which provides my students with much deserved mirrors and windows into the world around us. My kids deserve to see themselves in the texts they are reading and they deserve a window into the world around us, not just in my class library but also in my small group, differentiated instruction.

Expected Outcome(s)

The literacy footprints 3rd grade kit will benefit about 130 students across 6 teachers in one school year. These resources are reusable, so I foresee them serving hundreds of students in the years to come. Because the literacy footprints system is founded in best reading and writing practices and these best practices are in turn research-based, I foresee this grant having a very positive impact on the vast majority of our Title I student population.
