As an art teacher, I find it important that my students get the opportunity to experiment in all visual arts as it relates to the Sunshine State standard, VA.912.S.3.12
Impacted by Covid-19 material and tool sharing are not feasible, we will need all the help we can get to continue support our Art Program at Wharton HS.
Develop competence and dexterity, through practice, with the use of processes, tools, and techniques for various media. We make the class fun as the students work on various clay forms. Ceramics is an old art form often used for functional items. My students learn to make plates, boxes and art work using clay as the medium. Ceramic without glaze is an unfinished masterpiece and through this grant, we will gain enough glaze to make colorful creations, canvas covered boards to work on and easy to clean aprons to leave the mess at school.
This grant helps me teach the standard by having the proper tools, materials and techniques for clay. Especially during this hard time.
My students love to work with clay since it can be very therapeutic. My kinesthetic learners choose to manipulate the clay over other visual art medium like pencils or paint. Clay is very forgiving as long as proper techniques are followed prior to it being fired in the kiln. We are lucky to have a cone 5 kiln in the classroom. The only downside is that glaze is the most expensive consumable material that is used with clay and sometimes we simply run out of glaze. This grant benefits my students by having enough glaze in every color for my students to do the best work they can. It will also help me to create take home kit during eLearning.
My students learn about the properties of clay, how to construct it into different forms and what to consider when firing their pieces in the kiln. There will be easier to manage with the help from the canvas covered boards and the denim aprons. The glaze is the icing on the cake that makes a piece pop to live. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing a student go from conceptualizing their creation to having the final piece finished.
The expected outcome is that with proper aprons, boards and glaze, the students will enjoy working with clay and have colors to express themselves.
